Universal Studios is totally worth going too, I like it so much better than Disney Land. I don't really have any tips on what you should do in San Francisco, even if I live there, you should totally try seeing Wicked or Spamalot, both playing in San Francisco, if you like Broadway musicals that is, but it's like a once in a lifetime chance, I'm pretty sure both shows run Tuesday-Sunday. They don't have any performances on Monday. Both have lotterys, where you can get cheaper seats.
Let' see there's always downtown San Francisco, where they have the shopping, that's at Powell. We don't get a lot of celebrities in San Francisco, so there's not much celebrity related you can do.
There's also the museums (sometimes they have free days, normally the second or third week of the month). You can check though, there's a lot of them, I really like the Academy Of Science, it's like 3 museums in one, totally worth going too, but kind of expensive if it's not a free day. There's Golden Gate Park and Golden Gate Bridge. Chinatown, SFMOMA, taking a cable car, Fisherman's Wharf, financial district there's the former TransAmerica Building, Angel Island, Coit Tower/Twin Peaks, Crooked Street/Lombard. Angel Island will be closing so if you want to see it, I would suggest going before they close it. Fisherman's Wharf gets kind of crowded and it's kind of touristy. Oh Chinatown is nice, there's also the smaller Japantown, which is also great.
And if you don't mind hiking/walking, there's free walking tours around san francisco, you might want to try (the link for that is
http://www.sfcityguides.org/, also san francisco city hall does free tours daily too.
And I think that's mostly it.
For LA, I haven't been there in a while, so maybe somebody who lives down there can give you a better understanding on it. There's the live talk shows (
http://tvtix.com/).
