Parents on Autograph Collecting
I'm 14 and really want to start autograph collecting through the mail. I have a few but they are all IP autographs. The only problem is my parents arent too thrilled with the idea, any suggestions on how I could try to convince them? I'm sure if I have good reasons they will come around.
Collected Autographs: Steve Smith, Savannah Outen
Most Wanted: Amanda Seyfried, Jack Black, Emma Watson, Dakota Fanning, Abigail Breslin, Nicholas Sparks, and Rachel McAdams

Well when i started(about 10 years ago) my parents was like you but they more and more saw that collecting autographs became more and more of a hobby for me and they could se the smile om my face when i got my first autographs. After some years they saw that my collection got bigger and bigger and i started to sell some autographs for an extra penny. First then they got more interested in my hobby and asked me what my newest autograps was,When my mother got the mail if she saw that it was a big envelope for me she thought i got an answer from a celeb and put the envelope on my head until i came home from school. Autograph collecting is such a fun and exciting hobby. You have to be patience when sending out.. Tell your parents that autograph collecting is a thrill for you and you really want this as a hobby. This hobby does not hurt you and cost that much(like sports for example).
I really hope your parents are changing their mind later, As i said you can even earn some money selling autographs too. But that should not be the reason you are collecting thow

I was really lucky; my mom was a movie nut (like me) and was always really happy for me when I got a success. Why aren't they keen on the idea?

I am also 14 years old and I started autograph collecting when I was 12 years old. I was lucky my mum was fine with me doing it. She wasn't that interested in it at first but now she asks me who I got TTM and she can even give opinions on authenticity.
I would just send a letter or two at first and then when you get a reply show your parents and put a big smile on your face. It is sure to win them over.

Also, maybe stress that you are writing to celebrities you are a genuine fan of, that you want to let them know how much their work means to you, and you're not just trying to get a ton of autographs from random people.

Perhaps offer to do little chores round the house to earn the money to buy stamps/stationary etc! Maybe if they see you're serious about it, they'll change their minds!

Re: Parents on Autograph Collecting
try sending to some important people that are really good with responses...like Jimmy Carter...or even try Martin Sheen...hes AWESOME with fanmail...hell sign anything you send him, write a little note and include his own photo...hes awesome...he even writes the return address on your envelope and he frequently pays for postage...
but some successes like these might warm them up to the idea...
hope it works out...!!!!
ps
i just had the thought, your parents might not like the fact that your spreading their address all over the world....see if this is the case, if it is, see if there is someone else you know that wouldn't mind lending their address...like a grandparent or an aunt, or close family friends....
that might work a bit better...
anyways
i hope this worksw out for you
ive been collecting for 2 years (im 17) and i love it and my parents waremd up to the idea quite well.....so best of luck

Re: Parents on Autograph Collecting
I'm 17 when I started collecting autographs and I don't tell my parents about this hobby before. When I got mails and if they ask where it came from, I just tell them that it's from a friend. LOL. Yeah, I am lying to them because they won't allow me to spend my money and allowance on it. Until one day, my mom cleaned my room and she found all the letters and envelopes with celebrity addresses inside my drawer. He asked me what are those for. hahaha. I just told them that I'm into this hobby. Soon, I convinced them that it really makes me happy.
But try to convince your parents.
I hope they'll understand your desires.
Happy collecting!!

But try to convince your parents.

Happy collecting!!

Your parents should be happy that you've chosen a decent, harmless hobby, instead of going out and looking for/getting in trouble! That should be reason enough for them to allow you to continue with it
You should also assure them that you will only write for autographs you really want, if they're worried about the cost factor
