Re: why are old singers such jerks
Can you give me your source that someone like me could meet someone like Hilary Duff for $150? And I'm not saying that Duff isn't a legend and then Henley is...there too different to compare.
I think we also need to respect the privacy of the celebs too. Obviously it's that much so they don't have to make 49854895948598 meetings with fans a year. Setting a high price decreases the number of people willing to do it SHARPLY.
And to some people who ask for autographs and sell them (plenty of people do it on here, and some advertise on here about it), how is the celeb signing something being good to their fans, who are going to sell it? That's obviously being two faced for the fan, and makes the celebrity look stupid for "giving away" autographs for "free", while they could be making a good profit from them for personal expenses or charitable donations.
Examples:
Jane Seymour, the famed actress, recently lowered her signing "price" to $10 and postage, per item. The $10 goes to a fabulous charity, City Hearts. However, Jane unfortunately makes you buy something from her merchandising, so the profits somehow help her. The average autograph for her on ebay I thnk I read it around $40, give or take $30. Obviously the $10.84 isn't that bad if you already have a picture. She still atleast agrees to sign, while as "Miley Cyrus Fan" say a lot don't.
Petula Clark, the actress and singer, has decided to give the money she raises to a Teenage Cancer foundation, which I happily agreed to, being a teen. Not only that, she sent me two autographs for $10 ($10 per photo as well). This is obviously a sign of a good celebrity.
Kate Shindle, former Miss America and star of Broadway's Legally Blonde: The Musical (Viviane) and the national tour of Jekyll & Hyde: The Ressurection Concert (Lucy Harris), does not sign through the mail. I'm sure she still receives many letters (I've sent some!), and while you may not like that she just disregards it, she is still great to her fans. Attend one of her concerts, and you will find someone who will stay after and talk to nearly everyone there.
So you cannot judge the celebs by whether they sign through the mail or not, or if they charge money. It does not mean they're not nice to their fans.

oh ya i agree with you on that but only if they give the money to charity like hayden panettiere or bono does. i mean even if they sell autos on their site, its fine as long as they can be personalized, then i dont have a problem, but like i said give atleast half the profits to a charity hell the average celebs makes i think just enough to feed the familyphilly0330 wrote:Can you give me your source that someone like me could meet someone like Hilary Duff for $150? Re: why are old singers such jerks
I see your point, but just think about some of these people. They've been famous forever. They've signed thousands upon thousands of autographs. They've had to meet thousands of fans. Just imagine if you were one of them. Retirement is a time to relax. I'm sure that most of these people aren't jerks. They're probably just tired of it all. Also, they may just not have the time for all those autograph requests.
As for Don Henley and other people like this (Buzz Aldrin, in particular), they might just need the money. Just because you're famous doesn't mean you have loads of money (case and point, I saw Ed McMahon on Entertainment Tonight last night; he's receiving foreclosure on his house). He just might need the money.
So yeah...Some celebrities are jerks, but you shouldn't jump to such conclusions about them so soon. They might be really great people!

Re: why are old singers such jerks
Thank you for re-stating my point. You have no idea what life is like as a celebrity, especially ones who aren't really in the spotlighht anymore. Miley Cyrus Fan we could go at this all day, but I still don't seem them as jerks. You can feel angry though, because I'd certainly be disappointed if they blantly said no, but sometimes it happens. And you still have not given me any source/proof that I could meet Hilary Duff for $150.DwightKSchrute wrote:I see your point, but just think about some of these people. They've been famous forever. I am totally with you on this Anthony. Don Henley must know that a lot of his fans don't have $3,500 to blow. I don't think it's fair to charge so much. A nominal fee is fine if there's a portion going to charity but $3,500 is just saying "buy me" in my humble opinionmiley cyrus fan wrote:oh i know hes done alot for enviromental causes but still its 3 thousand 500 dollars is a lot of money just to meet a person i mean you get a autograph with it but come on, i mean hilary duff charges 1 hundred and 50 dollars per person for a meet and greet ,yes i know henley is a legend and duff isnt(shes still a great singer thou) but come on and hilary duff is super sweet( i met her and her kindess was unbeliveable). dont get me wrong i understand what your saying but you should be a little nice to your fans like i said theirs two people i dont understand why they cant sign belinda carlisle and sussana hoffs. i mean even if they autoprinted it would be alright. anyway thou what are you going to do. btw i still love the eagles music the go-gos music and the bangles music, but man did i wish they signed.

As I already said, I really think it's that high so he doesn't have to meet fans. If the "meet & greet" price is cheap, everyone would do it. Therefore, raise the price high and make it something special. And maybe the money does go to charity or whatever the event is your hosting...do we have any proof?margotchanning wrote:I am totally with you on this Anthony. Re: why are old singers such jerks
I'm sure that many of these people are so famous that wherever they go they are constantly noticed and often annoyed by people.
Ok, it's part of the deal if you are famous. But imagine, that wherever you go, to the bakery, supermarket, in town shopping, the movies...every minute someone tries to talk to you and ask for your autograph..I would go NUTS
There are nice people who have respect and who would do it in a decent way, but these days (through various jobs I have) I have noticed that maybe 30% of the people are friendly and respect you.
My mother is also quite known in her job (no she's not a celebrity) but she is constantly annoyed at home. And of all the people she meets there are a lot of unrespectful people around and nutcases...even people who have a very decent job and seem to look normal.
She already goes completely nuts. So I often think about how the life of a real celeb must be.
People are sometimes very rude and when you meet such people everyday you get sick of the whole thing.
I understand that some celebs don't want to spend time on this...And admit it...about 80% of the people who want autographs are not really HUGE and BIG fans.
Many want autographs to sell or collect just for fun...and these people realize that too.
Not saying that there is anything wrong with that...but if you are so well known, you must get tons of mail and requests... And some are not into it.. And I totally understand that. They have lives too...and they are probably busier than most of us.
Some say is it too much asked to send my envelope back with an autograph...but if you get about 50 letters a day asking this...imagine you have to do this each day of your life..
It wouldn't be for me though...
People like johnny depp are so rich they can afford someone who takes care of it...but some are not...or just don't see why they should bother.
Anyway I discovered this site and I like it a lot. I'm not collecting the autographs. Just writing to a couple of people who I'm a big fan of. I even feel uncomfortable writing to them..

Re: why are old singers such jerks
So nice to hear someone say that! I actually don't feel all-too comfortable writing to celebs, but as you said earlier it is part of the biz! And I'm sure they love getting mail just as much as we do!I even feel uncomfortable writing to them..
It gets so bad for some that they literally wear baseball caps and have newspapers to cover their faces when they simply go to a restuarant. It's okay if they're leaving I feel, not to swamp them, but a simple hello & a smile or "I'm a big fan of yours!", but no mob scene! I've seen a lot of this around people like American Theatre Composer & LyricistStephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, Company, Sunday in the Park with George, Gypsy, ETC.,....!). Apparently people always talk to him whenever he's in NY and it's become a rarity for him to visit his shows, when they are playing. I don't actually believe Andrew Lloyd Webber (Cats, EVITA, Phantom of the Opera, Sunset BLVD., Jesus Christ Superstar,etc.....................................!) even leaves his estate except the extreme rarity to go to his offices or to very occasionally check his shows! I'm sure he'd get entire swamped/mobbed too, and it's rather unfortunate.I'm sure that many of these people are so famous that wherever they go they are constantly noticed and often annoyed by people.
I actually love a story I heard international-singer-actress Linda Eder (Broadway's Jekyll & HYDE, concert artist) talk about fame. She really thought she'd love it, and she really doesn't! She said that when the show Jekyll & HYDE debuted in 1990 in a theatre in Houston, the day after she left her house not expecting anything dressed in "sweatpants & a scrunchy" to the grocery store to find about 10 fans (not much, but after just one performance) wanting pictures and she jokingly said she had to decline! She defanelty had the potential (and certainly the ability and comparrisons by newspapers and critics alike) to be the new "Barbra Streishand", but she clearly just enjoys a simple life, which I think is awesome!

Re: why are old singers such jerks
And for the record, I can't believe the lack of respect so many people (this thread is just an example!) on this board have for celebrities. I don't think you'd want 10 year olds who have been "listening to your records forever" wanting to schedule a meet & greet at 9 AM when you could be sleeping
. And the fact that so many people post rude comments about how they "wasted 42c/" by getting a letter saying you have to pay for the celebs autograph for charity or an RTS or whatever, just blantent disrespect. They are people too! I thought this was like three of the top 25 rules people should find out in their lifetime.
Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Treat everyone with dignity & respect.
and HAHAHA
Celebrities are people too!
I don't think celebs would like to find out that certain people send a letter (42c/) and get a "free" autograph and sell it. Or even 82c/ for an autograph is nothing!
