Yesterday (Saturday 17th January 2009) I was fortunate enough to be invited to the BAFTAs of Meryl Streep: A Life In Pictures situated in the HQ in London.
On my arrival fans were gathering outside awaiting autographs and for sure she didn't sign any when she walked through them all.
It then occurred to me that I would wait afterwards at the bottom of the stairs to see her off (I knew she wouldn't sign anything). She walked straight through them all and to my disgust fans began to boo her just because she wouldn't sign for them. Now for sure the couple of people who booed her were definitely NOT FANS but Dealers which I have seen at various other events I have been invited too (they had wads of photos. I don't think fans would have hundreds of photos do you).
Thought I would share this with you and that not all people seem to be who they seem to be (FANS not Meryl). She's a lovely lady but works very hard and is not a surprise she had to be whisked away by security.
Enough of the banter I wish you all a successful 2009.
Enjoy your year.

Fans (and I can guarantee that some of those booing were indeed fans) have every right to boo, its their choice. To claim it was all dealers booing is a bit far fetched.Crostini wrote:Yesterday (Saturday 17th January 2009) I was fortunate enough to be invited to the BAFTAs of Meryl Streep: A Life In Pictures situated in the HQ in London.

Most of the fans waiting for Man Utd here a few weeks abck ended up booing the players as all bar one refused to sign.
I dont see it as disgusting, but Im not saying I agree with it.
And if you dont think fans would have lots of photos, then you'd be surprised...

It is disheartening to wait for hours and not even have the celebrity look at you. It's part of the hobby. Ebay dealers have ruined the hobby for us collectors. Anyone collecting autographs before Ebay can tell you what fun it was, and how much easier it was to get signatures.

Over 9,000 requests sent since 1986.

Hello, I was lucky enough to win tickets to this event, too!
So, I was inside the event obviously, but I had many friends who had waited around outside all day. They told me about what happened - how terribly people treated her, how disrespectful they had been and how the booing that occured ruined it for them. It wasn't neccessarily the booing at first, but the fact that people were CIRCLING Meryl, HARASSING her, shoving things in her face. Just awful...
I was lucky enough to meet her at this event, and the previous day at the Doubt Premiere too. At the Premiere, we all stood there calmly (in silence actually, I think we were all a little flabbergasted, lol) and she came over and was very, very friendly. She signed EVERYONE'S things for them, and even gave me and two others a hug. She's just lovely. I think that there are right and wrong ways of going about getting a celeb's autograph, and the BAFTA event was just an appalling example. I know how upsetting it can be to have stood around all day, and then not meet somebody - especially Meryl, but at the end of the day it's the chance you take. Also, at this particular event she had to rush out as she had a flight to Japan to catch.
I do agree though, it is eBay that has ruined chances of getting autographs. Shame, really...
Just incase you were interested, here's the photo I got with Meryl inside the BAFTA: Life in Pictures: http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p76/ ... 0_5466.jpg

Seriously, it's great to hear that such a big star was so nice to everyone but it's sickening to think that some people were really rude to her. Unfortunately, some people think celebrities are there for our convenience and they forget that famous people are still PEOPLE after all!

Re: Disgusted At Some People - Meryl Streep Fans
^Thank you!! It really was amazing, and well worth the wait! The whole weekend was so insane... I just can't get over it. I can't believe how lucky I was. Yeah, it's lovely to see she's so friendly with fans, you would think that after all these years she'd be a little fed up of all the same compliments and be used to getting gifts etc from fans, but she was so genuinely surprised when I gave her mine. (She said, "Oh that's for meeeee?!" and thanked me numerous times, and when we unintentionally followed her down the stairs, we overheard her saying to her security guy, "I can't believe all this!") What a gem!

I agree with Dobie516, Autograph dealers do seem to ruin it for us...
