Do you make impressions of people based on siggys/avatars?

I know most people have celebrities in their signatures and avatars, but is it only me who makes (a probably very inaccurate!) impression of that person, based on siggys and avatars?

I mean, take me for example. I assume some people might think of me as being older than I am, and possibly even a man, when I am in fact a girl, lol.

I was just curious to see if anyone else does this, even subconsciously.

OMG! Your so right! I do that all the time. Also it is so weird when you have a picture of what they look like in your head, and perhaps you might see a pic of them, and they look totally different. sometimes i literally hate my brain, because it always makes me think something wrong. its funny u posted this. i thought i was the only one...lol

Yes! I was just thinking about this the other day!

Like if someone has a picture of -- let's say Robert Pattinson -- as their avatar, I can't help but think they look a tad bit like Pattinson. It's only because I have no other guide to go by, really. :lol:

I do in some ways. If a user has a young girl in their images for example, i.e. Taylor Swift or Demi Lovato or something, I assume them to be say, under 18 and female.

Mine I think helps in some ways to establish me as female, despite having a masculine name!

It's all stereotypical of course. If a user happened to be gay, they might have images which would correspond to the opposite sex (or equally, they might not lol).

Excellent question. :)

I think a person's choice of username, avatar and signature can tell you a lot about their demographics and personality - and I do somewhat base my impressions of people on these.

My username is taken from an album by The Beatles (I also like antique guns) and my avatar is the absolutely incredible actor David Tennant. My signature is self-explanatory.

Damn straight.

I'd I infer from this that you're also female, older than me though (judging by Beatles ref & antiques). 30+. Would I be correct... or have we proved that people shouldn't judge books by their cover? ;)

Haha, this is all very interesting, thank you for your feedback!
I guess you can sort of tell I'm British from mine though.
Or maybe that I just have a great love of Sherlock Holmes. {??}

Good topic! I expect that everyone knows me as an older guy, having been a collector since 1972, and having my avatar/signature of a 1940's movie.

This is definitely interesting. I usually do get some sort of impression of people through their avatar or signature. Mostly what age group they are in.
