We call it Rememberance Day too, but it is held on this day (in both the UK, US and other UK Commonwealth Countries) because it commemorates the armistice signed on 11th November 1918. In fact, it was only renamed in the US in 1954. Not quite sure why they bothered, but never mind. Veterans Day is exactly the same thing as Armistice Day (it's not just for those killed in WW1).
