This is sad. The very last survivor of the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima has died. Here is the story.

I read the book: Flags of Our Fathers. It was great- I reccommend it to everyone!

Was this guy the last of both flag raisings or just the first? I know there were 2- the second one is the infamous shot. I didn't know if he was actually part of the photo that Americans are so familiar with.

Either way, it is a sad loss. The "greatest generation" is soon to be gone :(

He helped raise the first flag. And he wasn't in the infamous shot. To bad. Are there still any surviving members of the 2nd flag raising?

BTW, i read Flags Of Our Fathers....awesome book. I recommend it too. :D

I wrote to him a few years ago and he signed an index card for me. He was only involved in the first flag raising which in my opinion was the most important one. About the flag raising Mr. Lindberg said this:
"Two of our men found this big, long pipe there. We tied the flag to it, took it to the highest spot we could find, and we raised it. Down below, the troops started to cheer, the ship's whistles went off, it was just something that you would never forget," he said. "It didn't last too long, because the enemy started coming out of the caves."

Unfortunately he was the last flag raiser from either of the flag raisings.
