puppy

Unread post by moo41 »

my friend johns birthday just past the 3rd of this month... and 2 of his friends gave him a 6 week old puppy as a gift
but since he works in tampa and we live in spring hill (its like a 30 min drive from here to there) he needed someone to take care of him
so i offered to babysit him when john had to work, i babysat basically the whole week
make long story short he ended up giving it to me because he couldnt take care of him because he didnt have any time
oh btw the puppies name is Audio hes a chihuahua/beagle mix about 2lbs
well he has fleas... and also worms john told me
i was wondering if anybody knew how to get rid of fleas for puppies
i went to the pet store and they said audio was too young for flea shampoo so to use dawn soap and bath him with that
and john went to the vet and they gave him a pill for the worms
but im worried cause i also have another dog and bichon frise and it seems like he has fleas now too
i know that i can get rid of his because hes like 10 years old

does anybody have any tips for me?
my bichon taj doesnt seem to really like audio... i mean he does but hes probably jealous
audio always wants to play with taj and chase him around but taj just runs away
its pretty funny seeing a puppy chase a grown dog

heres some pictures of audio

I have 4 dogs and 12 cats plus other exotic animals. You need to get the little guy to the vet. One pill for worms may not do the trick. Their is several different worms an animal can get. Also a vet will be able to treat the pup for fleas. As you know your big guy needs to be treated for fleas and I recommend Frontline. Be careful alot of the others are very toxic to animals. Flea baths are fine but doesn't always do the trick and there is no long lasting protection. Also depending on the size of your home you need to get flea bombs and bomb the house. Although both dogs will be treated, fleas will contine to live in your home.

Flea /insect bombs can be purchased at Lowe's, Home Depot basically most stores that carry insect repellent. They won't specifically say Flea Bomb It will be a brand name like raid etc. just check to see if it kills fleas. Also know how many you need per your square footage of your home. Get anything that breathes out of the house, follow the instructions and your good. Eventually the big guy should get use to him. the pup wants to play and the other is 10 yrs. old so he looks at him like go away you little rug rat. Give it some time and the pup will be ( Hopefully) sleeping next to him. It just takes time.

ohhh i see so i should just go to lowes or home depot and ask for a bomb that kills fleas and tell them the square footage of my house and they'll tell me what to get?
i just found a flea on my other dog and when i went to grab it it look like it layed a whole bunch of eggs my mom grabbed the flea and killed it and i tried to remove the eggs
can my older dog still get fleas even though we give him medicine?

oh and is it too early to crate train my puppy?
whats the best way to crate train him?

Your older dog can still get or carry fleas depending on what your treating him with and how long it has been since his last treatment. As far as crate training, I have never done that what I do is i gate a portion of the house off like a bathroom, kitchen spread out papers and train them that way.

oh okay
well we always give him program every month so i believe we gave it to him this month already
ive only had my bichon before this puppy and he was like 5 when we got him so i didnt have to worry about crate training
but my friend john said something about crate training and he bought the crate cage already... but unfortunately he didnt bring it to me and is still at his house
ill have it by tomorrow though im sure

i just got a job last tuesday and now i work every week day from 8.30-5 so i dont know whether to leave him in the crate for that long or what... plus my dad doesnt get home till like 4 and my mom works certain days sometimes till 5 sometimes like till 2

i think i might try what you said about the gates
maybe put him in the bathroom or something

You need to bathe both dogs, and spray your entire house with flea killer. It is not a bomb or in a can, you get it at Wal-Mart in a bottle just like Fe-Breeze, you spray it everywhere and it kills the eggs, and living fleas absorb it through their skin and die, it costs about 5$.
DAWN is for the little puppy, it works really well. You need to buy the apropriate flea shampoo also you get it at Wal-mart for about 4$
An old method is to fill the tub or in your case the sink for the puppy with water, hold the dog under the water so only it's head is not covered, the fleas will all rise to it's head because water drowns them, when they start rising to the head remove them and drown them.
Fleas are terrorists. If you see them in your home you neeed to act very quickly. The sooner the better. 1 can lay 25 eggs per day, so you do the math. In a week you will be inundated with them.
I recomend finding out where the puppy came from, go to the breeder and tell them the dog is flea ridden adn has worms. If they refuse to pay for the medication and flea removal report them to the SPCA or animal control. It's illegal to sell a puppy that is sick.

Your older dog is ok to apply flea medication too. You get a 3 pack at WalMart for 9$, all you do is open the tube and squeeze a stripe from the dogs neck to it's tail. It keeps fleas away for 4 months. The box is a 1 year supply. You basically can get rid of the problem and be sure they won't be back for under 20$.
Good luck, move fast, it will only get worse with time.

okay well im going to bath my older dog, because we just took him to get a haircut not to long ago i think like last week or 2 weeks ago
i think that my parents bought flea shampoo for him yesterday
and about that old method i totally forgot about that, thats when the person at the pet store told me to do also but i just remembered about the dawn
see the problem is i dont know where the puppy came from... and my friend that had him first doesnt know where his 2 friends got him from
i think im going to ask my friend to ask his friends where they got him then
so its illegal to sell a sick puppy? see this stuff i didnt know...

thanks alot chris
ill move on this fast

oh and also, does baking soda kill fleas? someone told my mom that that works

Spray is fine as a second defense however trying to spray every square foot of your home and the amount of bottles you would need would be insane. It would be cheaper to call in an exterminator. Depending on the square footage of your home and your ceiling height bombs are the most effective. Been there and have gone thru it all. Fleas and Tape worm which your pup most likely has go hand in hand. If an animal has Fleas he more than likely will develop tape worm.

One important note: Your dogs and your home should be treated at the same time. The dogs should be treated outside and left out till your home has been treated. Treating your dogs inside your home before the home is treated is defeating the purpose.

Combating a flea infestation in the home takes patience as for every flea found on an animal there are many more developing in the home. A spot-on insecticide, such as Advantage, Frontline or Revolution will kill the fleas on the pet and in turn the pet itself will be a roving fleatrap and mop up newly hatched fleas. The environment ought to be treated with a fogger or spray insecticide containing an insect growth regulator, such as pyriproxyfen or methoprene to kill eggs and pupae, which are quite resistant against insecticides. Frequent vacuuming is also helpful, but you must immediately dispose of the vacuum bag afterwards.

Even though organophosphate-based insecticides are still sold as flea collars, flea powders and flea shampoos, those are not recommended. Many strains of insects have become resistant against that class of compounds, and they display an unacceptably high level of toxicity against mammals.
