Spam is getting EXTREME!

Unread post by F.A.D.E »

Hello! :D

Is there any hope that things will look brighter in the future regarding spam with the new version of the board? Cos this is just terrible. I just spent about 40 minutes trying to clean it up a bit and report the rest - that's a lot of time :? Time which could have been spent actually replying to people needing help.

Hi Fatima :D

I really hope the spam goes away sooner or later. I think we're probably going through a bad patch at the moment, but it'll clear up :)

I know that on another forum I sometimes post in (and isn't very active nowdays), the registrations to join the forum were disabled altogether temporarily by the webmaster/admin because of the spam.

With the ability to ban spammers on the forums nowdays, you should ban whomever you can and remove (or move into this forum) the spam in the forums you moderate. Eventually, any other posts made by the spammer you had banned will be removed automatically.

Reporting every single spam post is the best thing to do, but it takes a long time, especially if the spammer has posted multiple posts. I think we all don't expect a member to report every single post when they appear. Just do the best you can - you're doing a great job so far!

Hello nowandagain,

Thank you for the reply :)

I never thought about sign-ups could be disabled but I guess it is an option if things get way, way worse! I hope it will look better in a few weeks time.

I usually ban a spammer and delete their posts - I don't move them. Is that wrong?

Yes, I report what I can because then the mods can deal with them faster :D

Thank you :D I try my best.

That's perfectly fine {up}. You're doing the right thing :) As I moderate the Feedback forum I can't delete the threads, so I move them here instead if I have to!

Of course, but obviously we don't expect you to waste your time and report every single post!

Good luck! You're doing a great job!

Hi guys {up}

I know spam can be a real nightmare and for the most part we stay on top of it all! I don't know if anyone can remember how it used to be before we made registration compulsory? :x

We had a real problem then - it was a total nightmare! To overcome that we forced all 'posters' to have to register before they could leave messages. Unfortunately the spambots then learnt of this and some of them now get around it

However there is not much more we can do short of banning IP addresses, but the downside of this is that we would also be effectively banning legitimate users in the process as many post from similar ranges of IP addresses (e.g. AOL etc).

Thanks for sticking with it guys, and I am sure if it is possible we will be doing more to stop this nuisance!

Ian
