That's not a stupid question! It's perfectly understandable. I personally write my letters on lined loose leaf paper. As for envelopes you have the envelope that you are going to send everything in, and another smaller envelope inside it that is going to be used by the celebrity for the return of your items. Also its best to include some praise or other information in the letter besides asking for an autograph. Good Luck!

Hi middi666
Here's how you should go about your request:
1. Write your request. Introduce yourself, say what you like about their work, politely ask for an autographed photo (or to sign your photo) and thank them for their time. Plain paper is good for this purpose, although you could also use lined paper if you wish. The decision is up to you.
2. Get 2 envelopes. You will need one to address to whomever you're writing to, and another one for a self-addressed, stamped envelope [SASE] (or self addressed envelope [SAE] and international reply coupons [IRC].) Make sure you include enough postage on the first envelope you're addressing to the celebrity. If you're sending to an address within your country, also add enough postage on the SASE to have it returned to you. If you're sending to someone outside your country, add some IRC's.
Since you aren't sending a photo, It's recommended you send an envelope the size of 9x12 inches and enough postage or 2 IRC's (3 to be safe).
3. Put your letter, and the SASE (or SAE & IRC's) into the envelope you've addressed to the celebrity. If you're sending a SAE and IRC's, you should preferably use a paperclip to clip the IRC's on the SAE so the celebrity can see them. Make sure you put your address on the envelope you're sending out in case it gets an Return To Sender.
You can write just a letter and send it as is, but you're more likely to get a response if you include a SASE with your request. It just makes it more easy for the celebrity to respond and they won't have to fork out too much money to reply to their fan mail.
Good luck!
