Hi. I dunno about other people, but I've recieved around fifty autographs, and I've yet to have any trouble with bent photographs - and I use no protection at all. I just write Do Not Bend ALL OVER (usually in pretty fonts & colors for mine and my post-office workers amusement) and I have no trouble. (I have, however, gotten some celebs write 'Do Not Bend' for me on the back from my early days).
I think what you use to protect your photo should really depend on your system and how well you trust it. For instance, I live in a small town and we have to go to the post office to get our mail - the workers either put it in one of the special drop boxes that is extra large and leave the key to that inside your box, or leave a note saying to pick it up in the office (they usually do that so they can see me open it.) My post office workers recognize it as autographs and treat it like gold - but I guess it depends on the OTHER end of where you're mailing as well. Just depends on whether or not you want to invest, I suppose.

Re: Packing the envelope...
WOW!!! I haven't check this post in a bit. I didn't get an email notification so I went around it. I just checked and I had responses. Thanks for your responses. I am going to go with an envelope and try not to fold the SASE. (if I can find envelopes big enough) We don't have cardboard, but a comic shop who has those little comic bags with a thin piece of cardboard. I am not sure if it is any better than the manilla folders. I will try a few things. Thanks for all of your help and your sending secrets.
