Can someone explain postage for me please?

I've been poking around on this site for a few months now, and almost everyday I see someone post a success, that I too would like to receive.

Unfortunately, I live in Pennsylvania and most all the addresses are in California.

I sent a request to Stan Lee and got a response via a self addressed and stamped envelope but I think I wasted postage in doing so.

I used four first class 44 cent stamps each way, for a total of 8 and that seems like a lot for each letter. I only say this because I know I've seen success, particularly a Kat Von D success from New Jersey that had only one stamp on it.

It's not that I think it's an unfair price for a free signature, I just don't want to waste any stamps, because less stamps used means more stamps to use for more autographs .

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I find this very confusing


On a side note, I think this is an extremely cool website. I really enjoy seeing others success', as well as receiving my own in the mail. I find it very exciting .

Stamps depend on the size of what you are mailing. Since you are in the US and the other address is in the US, it is pretty simple:

A small envelope (normal letter size) up to and including a 6X9, only needs 1 stamp for up to an ounce. If it is heavy (several photos) you will need 0.61 in stamps.

A large envelope a 9X12 needs at least 0.88 in stamps. If it is heavier you need 1.05 in stamps.

If they weigh a lot, you will need to add more, but that is what I use for my SASEs.

Hey Nomar1245!!

Wow, yeah for Stan Lee you could have just used two stamps one on each enbelope. For bigger 9x12 envelopes I use two .44 stamps. As long as the addresses are within the USA most requests should only take 1-4 stamps depending on the weight of the request your sending.

Thanks for the responses. That was really fast guys and I really appreciate it. I'll be sending 8x11 photos so......

I'll need 88 cents each way and I'll be fine. How safe will I be if I don't include a piece of card board to keep everything rigid?

I'm not to worried about the trip to because the photo paper I use is pretty tough, and that with two envelopes seems ok, its the return I'm concerned about.

I very rarely include a piece of cardboard and all my photos have come back in good condition. Good luck with your requests.

Your most welcome!! Adding more stamps does not increase the chance of getting a faster reply or delivery though. if you wanted to have it arrive faster you'd need to send it next day delivery by taking it to the post office but that costs a LOT!

Not to be a jerk, but i thought it would be funny to share after everyones help.......

With my new found knowledge on applying the appropriate postage and all, the first thing I mailed ended up being a plain old letter.

I was kind of amused by that and thought I would post.

The next thing I mail will definitely be some sort of request though.
