when writing an email to ask for an autograph, do people put their home address in the letter? Is that safe?

I would only recommend you add your postal address (whether home or a PO Box) if the address has been tested and known to work.
You do not want your personal details to end up in the wrong hands, as there have been instances where fans and other people have set up addresses "pretending" to be a specific celebrity.
If you wish to try an address, but no one has received a response yet, it would be best to write an email but ask whether it was OK to get a photo. If so, could you ask the person to please reply so you can send your contact details.
