Problem with a pic that I printed on photo paper

Unread post by Class316 »

Ok, I printed a picture from the Internet on photo paper and went and got it autographed.

Then when leaving the autograph session, I put it in a file and it was against another photo. I guess it must have been really hot and it got stuck to the photo on top of it and some of the ink got stuck to the back of the other picture.

This upset me a lot, HOWEVER,

the only part where it’s noticeable is the black area (which is good). The main photo and the text look ok to the naked eye.

Here’s a picture of the autographed item (I’m talking about the one on the left): http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/3835/mnm29ym.jpg

Notice the white dots? This is where the ink came off. Note that the big white blobs (on the lower left) are just reflection of the light.

And here are some close ups:

Again, the big white blobs are just reflection of the light.

So what should I do about it? Since it's only black, shall I just carefully apply a black sharpie on it? Or should I just leave it? Or should I find some other form of black ink? Thoughts?

Hi Class316 {up}

I personally wouldn't touch it. The problem is that it looks like your photo paper was glossy, and if you try to apply sharpie to it the pen mark will appear matt. In fact it will probably be even more noticable when the light catches it.

The only way you could do it would be with a very very fine nib pen or brush and indian / retouching ink which you can apply individually to each dot, but again, I would not advise it unless you have some experience of retouching photos.

I know it's a bit late to suggest this, but when you print onto photo paper with an inkjet printer you really need to properly dry the ink out before you use the print. The ink on an inkjet copy can still be damp deep inside the paper for up to 72 hours after printing.

If you need to use the print before then, I would suggest thoroughly drying it out using a hairdryer or fan-heater. You need to have it on really low heat and keep the print moving so that it doesn't curl up.

It sounds like what happened with you is that your print "sweated" moisture which adheared it to the other one in the heat of the sun.

I hope this helps a bit :|

What do you mean it will "appear matt" ?

I have no experience of retouching photos so I guess a very very fine nib pen or brush and indian / retouching ink is out (I tried fixing one dot with a sharpie to see how it would look like and it didn’t look too bad, but I guess I’ll stop there)

And I did wait almost 2 days after I printed.

So how would you recommend I find someone more qualified to do retouching?

Hi Class316 {up}

What I mean is that marker pen ink looks flat and non-reflective when you view it against glossy photo paper.

If you tilt a sharpie autographed "glossy" print away from you in daylight or better under a desk lamp you will see the signed bit looks flatter (not glossy) against the glossy surface of the photo.

If however your print is on matt paper (not glossy) then you might be OK with a sharpie.

It is totally up to you if you do the whole photo or not. However, what you will probably see (if it is a glossy photo) are the same damaged dots in black matt marker against a glossy black background - instead of white dots if it is viewed in bright light / daylight.

The print will probably look pretty OK in normal flat interior lighting (house lights), so if you are just planning to keep it for yourself for display indoors then you should be OK.

Professional retouching is very expensive, so unless you are totally unable to get a replacement autograph from this person I would not recommend it!

Hope this helps
