UK fanmail questions about postage and SASE.

Unread post by ameliaadale »

Hello, I've been intimidated to send fanmail internationally for awhile and keep putting it off, but I'm quite determined to finally tackle it.

I'm from the US sending fanmail to England and have questions about postage and addressing.

First of all on the main envelope. Will regular US stamps get it to England?
and on the SASE, should I put british stamps on it? I bought some first class ones on the royalmail site and I hope they will do.

Also how do you address it?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm only used to sending fanmail within my country! thank you :)

Hi,

US stamps will get it to England, you'll need to check the likely weight of the return envelope (from the UK overseas size makes no difference unless you are sending something really, really huge - a standard large envelope is fine).

I'm writing this in a bit of a hurry, but if you have a look at my response about IRCs on this post (near the bottom) viewtopic.php?f=2&t=228553 you'll find the answers to the other questions you've asked (just ignore the bit about IRCs!)

There are two different sorts of first class stamps in the UK, the smaller (portrait) ones are currently worth 46p, the larger (landscape) ones are worth 75p.

Good luck!

Thank you so much!! I'm finally starting to get it!

a couple more questions

How many British stamps should I put on the SASE? It will just be a large envelope holding an 8x10 picture. I usually just use two US stamps for my SASE.

Also how do you send it airmail?

Hi, you need to weigh the envelope with the photo in it, and any card you're putting in for protection.

For up to 100g you can follow the instructions I gave on the other thread, on the return envelope write "Airmail" in the top l/h corner, or put a blue airmail sticker on if you have any, and write "small packet" underneath.

Either print off a customs form, or write the details on the bottom r/h corner of the return envelope, as I've described on that link.

Doing it that way you can send up to 100g for £2.07.

Yes, the Royal Mail issue a lot of picture stamps which are larger in size, but unless they actually have the word "Large" printed on the stamp they are worth the same as the small ones.
