Question about the 13 ounce rule

Unread post by rdf8585 »

There's a rule that any package more than 13 ounces needs to be mailed in person at a Post Office.

If I mail out an 8x10 mailer with a smaller 5x7 mailer, a letter, and 1 DVD insert inside - is that more than 13 ounces?

When you send out requests like that, do you usually just drop them in a mailbox?

You'd have to get a postal scale or some type of small table top scale that people use to weigh food if their on a diet and see how much it weights. But I think if you put 4 stamps on it, that should cover the costs, packages are considered anything bigger than a 9x12 envelope. I work for a post office, so I just take my request with me when I go into work.

I agree with Ryan-J. Get a scale so you can weigh it at home and just put it in your mail box. I got one for Christmas a few years ago and I use it all the time.

13 ounces is a lot--think about the weight of a can of green beans, normally those cans are around 15-16 ounces so it is a little heavier than the 13 ounce limit--most things I mail (even packagages) are under that 13 ounce rule.

With what you described, I'd guess at least 4 ounces, maybe 5. Check the usps.com website for the cost to mail.
