First Class Mail (International), is the US service that we would call Airmail, is this what you mean?

Not really. All mail going overseas is sent by airmail. While it is not "free," it is now the standard way of mailing and the price of airmail is included in the First Class mailing cost. Here's the link to the USPS First Class International postage rates. You can weigh out your package and after you convert grams to ounces you can look it up in the tables to see how much postage you need for your SASE. The UK is in Country Price Group 3-5 in the charts.

I do know what airmail is packrat 
Just attempting to see where the confusion is coming from, and I thought it might be the name of the service which made him think airmail was free. Since in the UK it's referred to as Airmail and nothing else.
