No, I am pretty sure they are the same thing, and every letter from another country is considered airmail. I think this means the letter will travel by air. Not really sure though. But I can do know that they cost the same.

If you're sending a letter, I think airmail is the cheapest way to go. There's also "surface mail" which is really really slow, but that's mainly for parcels.
Even if you don't write "airmail" on the letter, as long as there's enough stamps put on, I've found it goes by airmail anyway.

Hi guys
You are right about surface mail, it is the only other alternative to
Airmail, but Royal Mail (UK) delivery times to the US for surface mail is 6-8 weeks.
From experience it really depends how "switched-on" your local sorting office is as to whether they will automatically send a letter
Airmail just by looking at the postage paid.
You might be lucky a few times, but it is always better to put an
AIRMAL - PAR AVION sticker on your envelope, or failing that write it on in
BIG letters!!!!
I have heard from many members on fanmail.biz who forgot to put an airmail sticker on the envelope and had to wait ages.
Your local post office will be able to give you a supply of stickers to take home, or even better - take your letter to the post office to mail. They will then print out a "franked" label which contains the
A symbol for
Airmail.
