Question about USA stamps in the UK

Hi! ;)
I've noticed that there are some successes from the United Kingdom but with US stamps on the envelope.

Now I know very well that you cannot use another country's stamps, but how come this seems to work? I've had people telling me that I can even use South African stamps on my SASE (which I still don't believe) as long as it covers the full postage. Can anyone help me with this and tell me how exactly it works (if it even does)?
Thank you!

It's possible that the UK mail people don't notice that it is US stamps--they just see that there are stamps on the letter and don't think to make sure that they are UK stamps.
Just my thoughts. {thumb2}

I think BossC is right, because it shouldn't really be done. I think it depends on how vigilant the person dealing with the mail is. It's a bit of a risk using them though!

I completely agree with above.
I've also seen a few successes from the UK with Polish stamps on the envelope
I know it's a bit risky, but I'll try sooner or later with a small envelope

Thank you, BossC, Phoebe and LeMon. {thumb2} I think you're right, perhaps the post office can't check each stamp individually, so they don't notice the US stamps always. I wouldn't risk sending my US stamps to the UK though as I don't believe it'll work!
Thanks!!
