Post Office Questions (UK only really)

Hi there. This could be a really stupid and lazy question to ask but i dont really know what to expect. In general, people at the post office in the UK, what sort of questions or things do they do when you hand them over a letter to be sent to another country.

I could just go and see but im generally a very shy person so i don't really know what to expect.

hi,

all you do is give them your letter and then they ask you where you want to post it to and how quick do you want it to get there.( it usually costs quite a bit to get it there the next day, so i usually pay for it to get there in three days which is much cheaper) once you have decided all that you pay them and give them your letter/parcel.

Sometimes they do ask for you to fill in a customs form, but that is only if you are handing over a really bulky item. Other than that you just say 'Can I send this letter to _____ please?' They will weigh it and then give you the price, hand it over and pay.

But like bolton123 said, don't pay for next day delivery, it costs too much over seas. Just pay regular 1st Class Post or 2nd Class Post if you are a very patient person. {thumb2}

They would ask you where the letter was going to and then they would weigh it. Sometimes, depending on which country you are sending to you will have to fill out a short form declaring the contents of the envelope, (E.g: letter, photos) but I haven't ever had to do this. As my envelopes abroad usually have 'PLEASE DO NOT BEND' written on them if I am including an item for the recipient to sign, I am often asked if I want to send it by Recorded Delivery or with insurance, but I have never done either of them.

I've never been asked this. Wonder why not.

EastendersFan, one of my local post offices has just been fitted with some Post & Go machines (self-service). I don't know if you have them where you are, but it means you don't have to go anywhere near a counter, unless you need an IRC or special delivery or whatever. These machines give out stamps too.

If you are going to the counter, though, just hold the envelope up so they can see where it's going and then they'll ask you to pop it on the scale. Works for me. They'll give you loose stamps or a sticky label and might give you an airmail sticker as well.

Dont be sorry! I am exactly the same, i have always been very shy.

I have been a couple of times to send over sea & its generally very easy. They will always ask you whats in it. I just say letter & photo. Its very quick & simple.

I don't think I've ever been asked to specify what's in an envelope.
