U.K. Postage HELP!

Unread post by khackdrums »

I tried to figure this out for myself, but failed miserably.

I am from the U.S. and plan on buying U.K. postage in bulk for future requests. I have always sent IRC's, but have had very little luck doing so. I don't understand the conversion rates, we are not on the metric system here in the U.S., plus I don't know what all the funny little symbles mean.

Simply said, what do I need to apply to an A4 (9X12 inch) SASE back to the U.S.? The SASE will include a 8x10 inch photo.

Thanks! {up}

http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/cont ... tId=400036

Under 20g (0.7oz) 90p
Under 40g (1.4oz) £1.35
Under 60g (2.1oz) £1.82

If you're just buying 1st class stamps (get the regular kind as the sizes dont matter for airmail) they're worth 39p, 2nd class are worth 30p {thumb2}

btw just curious... which symbols were you referring to? :)

I usually send smaller images to England (5X7s) but I did send one 9X12 and put 5 2nd class stamps on it (each 2nd class stamp is worth .30 to .30x5= 1.50) and it came back just fine.

Hope this helped!

£'s and p's. How many 1st classs stamps? Should three 1st classs stamps be enough? I had a response from Bear Grylls a while back he attached two 1st class stamps and a 50 denomination stamp. Does that 50 mean 50p? Do two 1st classs stamps and and 50p equal £1.28, because apparently that was enough back in November when I recieved my response from the U.K., unless there has been a price hike since. Let me know if I am on the right track.

Thanks!

£ = pound, p = pence. Basically... dollars and cents. Think of them that way.

1st class stamps are now worth more than they were (they're similar to forever stamps) so you can rule out whatever Bear used as it wont really mean much anymore (though yes, two first class & a 50p stamp equal £1.28).

Stamps come in 1st class and 2nd class (they're classed as they're intended for internal use, but the actual value of them can be used towards international post) as well as denominational, i.e. 50p like you mentioned (as well as 20p, 10p, 5p, £1 etc etc).

Check the weight of the letter, then use a combination of stamps to make up the price :) If you're using just 1st class, I'd say you'd need 4 (unless your letter is under 0.7oz, but I doubt it is).
