Collecting In Person

I'm going to New York City in September. The city's obviously a huge celebrity hotspot (I saw Ron Howard from the bus last time I went). I'm thinking about bringing index cards and a marker with me when I go. I was just wondering, if when I'm there I happen to see a celebrity I like (unfortunately I won't have time to actively hunt them down), what should I do? What do I say? When should I approach them? When should I NOT approach them? Is it rude to approach them at all? Pretty much any tips or information anyone can give me will be appreciated; I've never done anything like this before.

There some tips on the board under the "In Person Success" thread: http://fanmail.biz/mboard/viewtopic.php?f=128&t=20707

Personally, I only ask for celebs autographs in person when I've just seen them in a show and wait at the stage door or something like that.
When should I NOT approach them? Is it rude to approach them at all?
When they are eating, on a cell phone, speaking with someone, etc. Don't approach them when they look like they are busy. I would say, just use common sense. If they look llike they can't be bothered, then don't approach them.

Someone with more experience in doing in persons may be able to answer your questions better, since I don't do them hardly at all, but I would definitely take a look at the tips listed in the "In Person" thread and also you may want to read other peoples successes and see how they do it.

Good luck!

Yeah, I was thinking that I probably shouldn't do it at all if they're not doing something AS a celebrity (book signing, outside a stage entrance, etc.) but I'm kind of going back and forth on that. I partly made this thread, if in fact I shouldn't approach them at all, for people to be able to tell me, "Don't do it!". So it's okay, then?

Just approach them, this could be a one in a life time thing. Its not like your going to be arrested for saaying HEY to someone. Just do it, give it a try.

I kind of agree. I see both sides. Yeah, it's rude at times, but it may be only once in a lifetime thing. Also, if they are a celebrity, it has to be expected. From just fans, cameras, interviewed on the spot, etc. They have to assume that it will happen. It's part of the cost of being a celebrity. You make big bucks, you get hunted down...not literally. By fans.

If I were you, I wouldn't grab an autograph from anyone who's not doing anything as a celebrity. Most of my autographs are in person, and NONE OF THEM has been from anyone who hasn't just been on stage or at a podium or on a field. I've been to New York about 100 times and my only autographs there have been at stage doors or at Yankee Stadium.

I say DON'T DO IT!
