I'm sending an envelope to Canada from the USA. Do I use US stamps or should I take it to the post office?

You'll need to take it to the post office.

If you know the exact postage needed, you can just use stamps and drop it off at a collection box. If not, take it to the post office and have them handle it for you.

You don't have to take it to the post office. You can mail it from home if you have the postage. Sending just a letter is 0.75 in postage, but if you are sending more than that you will need to check the weight, size and look on usps.com to find out the exact price.
I'd be glad to help if you can give more details on what you are sending.

I would suggest taking it to the post office the first time around. You can use the scale in the lobby to weigh the envelope so you can see how much it weighs and how much postage you need. I usually bring a small notepad to write it down so I can look it up later if I need to.
If you are enclosing an SASE, the return envelope will have to have Canadian stamps on them.
