Ray Harryhausen - SASE postage problem from US?

I tried to get SASE postage (from my local US Post Office) from London to Los Angeles, but the post office clerk said the US Post Office could not do it without IRC coupons, which is a service they no longer provide. I then asked if I could just purchase regular postage from Los Angeles to London and put it on there, but they said that wouldn't work either. It seemed kind of crass to stick a $10 bill in the envelope to cover the postage, so in frustration, I included my SASE without postage and mailed it off to the New York address posted here. I then had second thoughts, and tried to retrieve the envelope, but they said it was already sent out.
I'm sure Mr. Harryhausen is a kind and generous man, but really, what are the chances that my 5-yr. old son will actually receive a response to his request for photo and autograph, because his mother was too impatient to figure out the postage on the SASE?

International postage has always been a problem for me. The only answer to your question is to wait and see. Some celebrites will respond, some won't.
For future refrence, you could find someone on this from to trade stamps with or order them online: I don't remember if the UK postal service ships internationally (US doesn't) but you could always e-mail and ask.
I'm hoping for a great success for your boy.

Fingers crossed for you.

It might come back many people get success without including stamps. If you included an addressed envelope and a photo I think you should have more chance of recieving a reply than if you just sent a letter - also he may be more happy to reply since the autograph is for a child.
It might be a good idea to do a swap with someone for some stamps for the future though - there are people swapping on the selling part of the forum, or Id be happy to swap a few UK stamps for some US stamps with you so you have some for the future - although I do only need either 5cent or 10 cent stamps right now so it would have to be a swap for those rather than forever stamps.
As Im writing Im wondering though, are you in UK or USA? Its just that you mentioned you went to a US post office but then you go on to mention London and the mention posting to LA - Im a bit confused ( not hard to confuse me though !

Thanks for the response! I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for that reply for my boy. I am in the US, and I have a few (12) 1cent stamps I'd be happy to share with you, just let me know how to get them to you across the pond, OK?
