Your question basically comes down to what do you prefer. I have been collecting for many years and generally believe that it is better to send a hand written (printed not cursive) letter. In my opinion a hand written letter is more personal and generally is more effective. I have made some requests by e-mail, but they are the exception to the rule.

As to what to write, most collectors use some variety of a three paragraph format. Generally you should cite some of the celebrity's work that you enjoy / or admire or whatever and be polite.

There is more detailed information available on this site that you may find helpful.
I have been asked many times about trading / selling some of my autographs. I am sorry but my collection is not and will not be for sale.
