4x6 Photo Resolution Question

I want to start printing off 4x6 photos. I usually print 8.5x11. For those photos, I find pictures that are larger than 1024x768 on google image search. What resolution size is big enough to make the photos good enough quality for a 4x6 photo.
Thanks!

That 1024 x 768 is a good photo size for a 4x6. I generally don't go any lower than 1250 x 850, but that size should work fine.

So you suggest not to go any lower than that? I was looking at some photos that are like 640x480 that looked great but didn't know if they are big enough.
Thanks for the help man!

That size should be fine. I usually open the file in Microsoft Paint and check the attributes, changing the setting to "inches" rather than "pixels," and from there I can find out how big a photo I can print out without it getting "pixelly." What Ryan said isn't exactly true. You can print 4x6 photos from file sizes way smaller than that.

I keep scans on cds of hi resoultion photos for many television shows. Adoramapix prints them for $1.10 and they have an autofix feature that will print really nice photos if they are above 1200x850 in 8x10 sizes. The dimensions dont always mean a lot since some are extremely large and look really grainy and the smaller ones sometimes look better. Im sure they dont have to be real big to print 4x6. Just save the image and open it full size and then resize to a 4x6 to see how it will look.
Try fanpop.com to find a ton of promos and hi res screen caps. Have to sort through smaller ones too but thats where I find a lot of my photos.
