How to send?

Unread post by raptorbill »

I am going to send an 8x10 photo to Canada. I think that the envelop is 9x11". Can I put US stamps on it when I send it? On the SASE do I put the same amount of Canadian stamps on it? This is my first time sending a request outside the US. Also were do I get Canadian stamps?

For Canada you'll need these stamps for the SASE. Three or four will work.

For the mailing envelope you'll need to take that to your post office and have them weight it and put postage on it. {up}

No, those are one of a variety of USA first class stamps and can only be used in the States. You will need to find a way to get some Canadian stamps. Once you know the weight of the SASE and contents (converted from ounces to grams) you can check with the Canada Post site to see how much you need for the SASE. You can go here for the Canada Post site: http://www.canadapost.ca/cpo/mc/default.jsf?LOCALE=en

Then you will need to find a way to get the stamps. I don't think you can purchase them through Canada Post, but look through here: http://www.fanmail.biz/mboard/viewforum.php?f=127 or check the "Wanted" subforum there. You can't initiate a trade or deal yet since you have to be a member for 3 months and have 100 constructive posts to do so. But if someone else is offering, you can get in on it if you wish. Maybe check with _Christopher_ in his thread and see if he is willing to help you out. Or you might have to (ugh) look on eBay.

Sometimes it's not easy to get started, but once you get around to figuring a few things out it gets easier.

No, I'm pretty sure those work, as a guy who does TTM requests posted a video on youtube and he said to use those for canadian requests. they have to have the .44 donimination number down in the corner which the forever stamps don't have.

Well, if it's on youtube it has to be legit, right? (Just kidding.)

Seriously, though, they are simply US first class stamps. I very much doubt that Canada Post would allow another country's postal service to print off and sell stamps for use in Canada without some sort of reciprocation, and I could not find anything simular on the Canada Post web site.

EDIT: The reason the Forever stamps don't have a denomination written on them is because the face value of the stamp will increase when First Class postage rates increase. Other than that, any USPS 44 cent stamp (or the equivilent) can be used in the US for sending a first class letter within the weight requirements.

If I send cash to be used for return postage from Canada to the U.S.A., how much should I send?

I'll try to answer both questions at once. In a nutshell, it all depends on the weight of the SASE and contents.

Seriously, first you need to go to the post office and use the kiosk in the lobby to determine the weight of your SASE and all the items you expect to be returned to you. It doesn't matter at this point how it will be sent, what matters is finding out how much it weighs. Secondly you need to convert the weight from the US system to the Canadian system of weight. Then you can determine how much postage it will cost to send from Canada to the US. Then the best bet is to obtain Canadian stamps. It doesn't really matter which stamps you buy, but what matters is getting the postage cost right. In order to do that you have to find out how much it weighs. It's easier than it seems, but you have to learn how to do that. If you can't get there on your own ask your mom or dad to take you there. Also, if you check the link I posted above for Canada Post, you will note that postage rates are scheduled to increase in January, so keep that in mind.

As for sending cash, first you need to be sure the person on the other end won't mind standing in line at the post office to buy stamps for you.
