Hi eug
I'm also from Melbourne, and find that 2 IRC's are sufficient to have a A4 envelope returned from either the US or UK. If you want to be safe, send 3 IRC's, but they are kind of expensive at $2.50 each!
Good luck with your collecting

awesome thanks for that. do u know how many 50c stamps u need for the UK and USA as well...for a4 envelopes. and does it differ for normal 1/3 of a4 envelopes?

You could use domestic 50c stamps to send letters overseas, but it would be best to use stamps for International mail (these can also be bought from Australia Post).
To send a A4 sized envelope from Australia to the US or UK, it would cost about $4.00 in 50c stamps (8 stamps). Should you do the same using the international stamps, it would cost about $3.60 (2 x $1.80 stamps). Australia Post has a policy that if you use domestic stamps for international mail, you have to add an extra 10% of the cost of sending the same envelope using international stamps

.
A regular, standard envelope (up to the size of 130mm x 240mm - about 1/3 of the A4 envelope) sent to the US or UK would cost about $1.80 in international stamps or $2.00 in domestic stamps (4 x 50c stamps).
I note that these prices are for an envelope up to 50 grams in weight.
Good luck with your collecting
