When a PrePrint comes with a personal inscription, who is it that writes them? Are the inscriptions secretarial? Do the stars personally do the inscriptions?

The method is probably different for various celebs. I just don't understand the whole idea behind the "personal-pre-prints". Isn't the whole concept of PrePrints that the star doesn't have time to write anything?

I'm just really curious.

If the preprint was sent on its own, without an ISP, then chances are it's done by a secretary who simply felt bad that s/he couldn't send you a proper autograph.

If not, like I got from Sir Ian Holm - my picture back signed plus a personalized preprint, that matched his writing on the ISP... then I don't get it either.

I dont think the celeb would inscribe a pp, I would say its a manager or something, with the only reason behind it being, You not being able to sell it

Yes, that's definitely could be one of the reasons why PP's are inscribed in the first place.

If celebrities send out PP's, it's very unlikely that they would actually inscribe them themselves. By sending out PP's, it sort of shows that they don't wish to be bothered by their fan mail too much, so why would they go to the trouble of inscribing themselves?

In most (if not all) instances, the personalisation will be done by an assistant or someone who could be working at their agent.

However, I guess that with celebrities that receive a large volume of mail, they don't wish to continually sign their name, so they send personalised PP's. By only personalising the photo, the celebrity could do half the work required in personalising a real photo - saving time. As Joeay said - Sir Ian Holm sent him his photo back signed with a personalised PP. Some celebrities probably do personalise their own PP's, but that's probably a very minute minority.
