Personally I don't.
I imagine that if I told them that I'm an autograph collector it would give off the impression that I'm not a true fan and I would be willing to sell their autograph on eBay as soon as I recieve it!
Some celebs may be reluctant to send you their autograph if you mention your an autograph collector, that is unless you're collecting for a charity.
This is my opinion anyway!

No, you're definitely right tinker_mel!
If you mention that you're an autograph collector, it may make you sound like you're writing to get an autograph and that you're not a true fan of their work. As such, the celebrity may be put off, and won't send you anything.
It's better to say that you're a fan of their work (besides, why would you write to a celebrity unless you liked his/her work?)
Good luck!

I agree with nowandagain. In all the letters that I send out, I always mention that I am a big fan of theirs and would appreciate it if they could autograph the photo I sent or send me an autograph. Mentioning that you are an autograph collector probably gives the celebrity a feeling that you might sell their autograph for personal profit.

I agree with everyone else, because quite frankly I will only EVER request an autograph from someone I am a fan of.
Look at it from this perspective - how annoyed would you be, if you wrote to someone you genuinely admired, requesting an autograph, but you never got a response from because they got inundated with requests from autograph collectors who found out this person was an 'easy target', so to speak.
Okay - I admit that scenario is a bit far-fetched, but I hope you understand what I am trying to say.
YES - I'm an autograph collector. BUT, I am only a collector of autographs of actors/shows that I love.

I agree with most people here. To say that I collect might seem to the celebrity that I am just trying to boost my collection. I'm sure that a lot of the celebs realise that the fans asking for autos are collectors anyways.

I never say that I collect, actually i try to make it sound kind of cute like I've never written to a celebrity before. It sounds stupid, but I've gotten much more personal autographs since i've started drawing pictures on my letters, decorating the envelopes, using stickers and things like that.
When i first started collecting I told actors that I was starting a collection, I probably did that for the first thirty or so requests I sent out and not ONE came back!
