On writing a letter to a celebrity

How do you write a short and sweet letter without sounding like, well, a dork or an adoring fan? Requesting an autograph or two is the point of the letter, but are there any other tips and guidelines people can share or compare concerning writing a proper letter?

Just tell them why you are a fan and a little about yourself. I like asking questions too. Not all will respond to those but some will.
