I'm sending and SAE to the UK, and I don't know hoe much the postage will cost. I'm sending a 6x8 envelope. Is it ok to just send some American dollars to pay for the postage?

It will work with some, but not with others. Do some research in advance to see who has replied using $$ rather than stamps. Remember UK based celebrities may have no need for $$ and won't be bothered changing them, so you could get your items RTS'd or just never see them again.
