Sending money for an autograph

Sorry if this topic has been asked alot, but I am new to getting autographs this way. I see some guys put $$$ in their LOR for autographs. How would you even know if the player was asking for money, and if the player was, how much does the player want? Or is this just a nice gesture thing? Thanks.
