Just wondering..

I'm trying to get an autographed photo (Nick Lea) for a friend for Christmas (I want to start out earlier because I don't know how long these things take...) So I was wondering, would it be better if I sent a letter requesting the autograph for my friend, or if my friend wrote a personal letter to him (that defeats the point of surprising her, but, putting that aside..)?

It's perfectly alright for you to write the letter to Nick. In this instance, I would recommend you add in your letter that your writing on behalf of a friend, and maybe say something about why yoru friend really likes Nick.

Don't forget to include a SASE with your request, it'll just make things so much easier for Nick to send you a photo!
