I'm new to this forum and I want to learn how to write a good letter before I send out something that is too long, disrespectful to the person, or something that stops me from recieving a reply. Below is a letter I want to send to David Hewlett(Dr. Rodney) from Stargate: Atlantis. I sometimes get overly paranoid about these things.
Dear David Hewlett,

I have been a Stargate SG-1 fan ever since season 7, and when I heard that a spin-off, called Stargate Atlantis, was going to happen, I couldn’t wait to see it. My older brother Kyle, my best friend Andrew, and I had a party for the grand premiere of the show. Ever Since I saw your character I, you were my favorite because you always make me laugh. I especially loved the episode where your character had the twin from another universe. I would really appreciate it if you could autograph and send me a photo of you, or you and the main cast of Atlantis.

Thank you,

Joshua Kaufmann

PS: If you could, my brother Kyle and my friend Andrew would really like an autographed photo too. My friend Andrew’s dad is going to Iraq for a year, and I think that he would really appreciate it.

Yeah thats pretty good, the only thing I would add is you need to say a bit about yourself (without going into your life story), just a little bit about you that makes you interesting. Maybe if its the area you live or your hobbies or anything like that. Also thank him for his time.
Hope this helps,

I agree mailman and no disrespect to fatima It's way too long. I've been collecting over 30 years In person, TTM and major buys talking thousands of dollars for one autograph. When I write a letter if it's more than 5 sentences long it's alot. More is not always better since most celebs.,athletes,etc.etc. usually don't read their mail beyond popular beliefe most see a sase envelope and/or a pic. and just sign. I don't know how many times I have actually received my letter back enclosed in my sase. Short ,simple and sweet and please do your homework find out who authentically signs TTM and who doesn't. I see an awful lot on here who is waisting their time and money on secretarials, preprints and autopens. It kills me but nobody wants to listen.
Have an awesome day

I don't think it is by any means too long. :? If the letter is too brief the recipient might feel as if the author is not truly making an attempt to show their appreciation and admiration. Five sentences seems a bit short to me; I do, however, see where you are coming from whosurdaddy, so I don't want to flat out disagree with you.

I think it is perfect. Though I would have thought too short, for example if you are a fan you should ask some questions.

I do think that sometimes less is more. But I seem to only write small letters to people I like but aren't a huge fan of. For example if I am a bigish fan of someone I write about a page, but if I'm just a fan of someone I only write a few sentences about them and then ask for an autograph.

I have to say mine are slightly longer but never longer than a page in about size 20 font. I base mine around 3 paragraphs-

Who I am
Why I like them
Auto request and thanking them

I think that shows that I am a fan of them and don't just collect autos from people I've never heard of like someone I met the other day. Also I think that 5 sentances in too short but I get where your coming from. Each of my paragraphs is about 5 sentances long. This is what I think and its up to you if you disagree.

I don't think it is too long, if you just write: Hi, I really like your work. I am a huge fan of yours, and if you have the time, could I please have an autograph?

^ That sounds like you have just rushed it and don't know much about the celebrity and don't really care that much =/
