Envelopes not cancelled

Hi guys! First time poster, long time lurker. I got an autograph from patton owsalt through the mail, but the envelope stamps weren't cancelled. I didn't think much of it, but today I got an autograph from Elle Fanning in the mail and the stamps also weren't cancelled. There was a weird bar code label on the envelope though. Has this happened to anyone else?

Yes. Often the post office misses envelopes in the mail: sometimes they go through the machine upside town so the barcode misses the stamps.

Sometimes the bar code is on a sticker; that's to help the PO machines sort and route the mail (primarily by zip code, IIRC.)

My experience is that it's about even odds whether or not the stamps will be canceled on a large (10x13) envelope, unless it's taken to the Post Office and hand-canceled right then and there.

thank you to both of you guys for replying. I'm between jobs so I watch a lot of TV and collecting autographs is new for me. It's sorta cool to get signed photos back. So far I got Leah Remini, Betty White, Patton Oswalt and Elle Fanning.
