Unwanted Autographs?
I was thinking about my autograph collection and I realized how some I've received are just because they were easy to get - via email... I know it's really bad of me and I feel bad for those celebrities who sent those but that was at the beginning of my autograph collecting... I don't think I will do that anymore... I will probably only write to those who I like and admire - some I've also written to because of only one movie I saw them in...
I was wondering... have any of you done that as well or am I the only bad, manipulative person out there collecting ^^
How do you guys judge whether to send off a request or not? Like some little kids... what makes you decide to write to them??
xxSkye

I write to people I am a fan of. There is no one in my TTM collection that I do not enjoy the work of.

Re: Unwanted Autographs?
Here's another question:
Do you keep up with the news on all the stars in your collection or just a few?

Hi! ;)
To your first question: I personally have never written to someone of whom I'm not a (very!) big fan of. {thumb2} As you can see I've collected autographs for around 2 years now and I have only 26 autographs (all authentic though).
Although I appreciate preprints/autopens, etc, I don't keep them. So yes, my famous quote: "I'm not an autograph collector, I'm a fan!"
To your second question: as I'm a big fan of everyone in my collection, I visit their fansites, IMDb pages and Wikipedia like every day to stay up-to-date on their latest projects.
That explains all the links on my personal collection site!
So if anyone else is also a big fan of anyone in my collection, you can contact me anytime if you want to know more about them! {thumb2}
Thanks,
zanne

Re: Unwanted Autographs?
I think you can be both an autograph collector and a fan.
I have hundreds of autographs, and while I am not a fan of every single person, sometimes they represent a greater good.
For instance I have a full sized replica of Captain Kirk's chair that has 40 autographs of Star Trek actors. While I am not necessarily a fan of each actor, I am a fan of Trek.
Also, I've been sending Playboy's off to be signed. I am not a fan of each person, but I am trying to complete a set of signed covers.
That being said, I don't understand people sending off just to get preprints or autopens when they know thats what they'll get, or an autograph of the Geiko gecko. Sure, maybe an auto of the guy who does his voice because he sounds hot or something. But a Gecko? An animated gecko? Of course, perhaps these are for younger collectors. I'm 35. So if it's kids requesting them, I say go for it.

If you were referring to my post, I never said one can't be an autograph collector and a fan at the same time.Droidboy wrote:I think you can be both an autograph collector and a fan.

Re: Unwanted Autographs?
I don't write or email people I've never heard of but I have autographs from people I'm not particularly a fan of because I'm working on several tv show casts. I also have autographs from people I used to be a fan of when I was a kid. I never send to people just for quick autographs but I've written to people who I don't absolutely worship.
I've even sent to studiofanmail in the past just because I liked the photo of the celeb I'm a fan of. I have a few sfm prints blue tacked to my wardrobe door. I don't treasure them but they're free and they're nice pictures! {thumb2}

Re: Unwanted Autographs?
I don't necessarily think it is a bad thing to collect autographs for the sake of collecting. Personally, I don't write to every person just to get an autograph - but I will write to people whom I'm not a huge fan of. I only am a big, big fan of a handful of people so in essence if that's the only people I wrote to, my collection would include 4 maybe 5 autographs. I think my opinion is different than alot of peoples. I don't consider it manipulative to get an autograph from someone you are not a big fan of. I've written to a few people that I do not particularly follow their careers all the time, but I do know who they are and I do like them. Like I said, I don't write to everyone, but I will write to someone whom I sort of like and know. (if that makes sense lol)
To answer your second question about how to decide who to send to. I have two lists that I update regularly. A short list (aka a list of people I'm going to write to immediately) and a TBA list of people that I eventually would like to write to. If I see people are getting a lot of success from a person on my list than I will write to them.
