I buy posterboard and cut it to size for the photos I am sending. If you like 8x10s or magazine photos and send them in 9x12 envelopes I get five 8.5x11.5 pieces from each posterboard. It's a very inexpensive way to protect the photos. The best part is they come back to you so you can reuse them.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I wanted to add my $.02.
I don't work for the post office, but I work for a similar company (ups). I know at ups we don't pay attention to "fragile" "do not bend" etc. It's not that we're jerks it's that the system isn't built to treat packages/envelopes as special nor does the company wants us to(Its not cost effective, I'm sure). There's too many and the company (that's the real problem) doesn't care as long as it gets to it's destination on time. And usually it's not the people who bend/brake the packages/envelopes it's the conveyer belts and shoots that do 99% of the damage. Of course if the company made it a priority, I'm sure the damagings would end.
I'm sure the post office is very similar.

I just moved into a house, and for the first time bent mail has been a problem (when I lived in an appt., the mailman would just take larger envelopes to the office). My Maureen O'Hara was bent right down the middle, and my autograph from Judge Judy -- which came in a very rigid cardboard mailer -- was creased about half way up the photo. Drives me nuts!
2014 Successes:
Tom Baker, Patrick Stewart (vv), Peter Cullen, Robin Atkin Downes, Jenna-Louise Coleman, Trace Beaulieu, George Lowe, Joe Dante, Willem Dafoe, Jeffrey Brown, Maurice LaMarche, Alan Oppenheimer, Penn & Teller (last success 10/14/14)

The only thing that works is rigid photo mailers,it's more expensive and you need a bigger envelope to send it all in and more postage but it's worth it in the end, even my last 9x12 rigid cardboard mailer came back with minor creases and 2 grease stains lol but the photo was undamaged imagine if it had been a regular envelope the grease would have soaked right through,i mean whats he using mail for donut coasters lol

Our mailman has been delivering mail since Moses was in short pants and could not care less about "do bend" or not jacking up our mail if he sees fit. He is close to retirement and we have a new guy taking over the route. I talked to the new guy and found out he likes to hunt and I told him about a few good places I know to try. I also asked if I got any flats in the mail would he mind not bending them. Today he hand delivered a large manila envelope to our door (and we live a good distance from our mailbox) because, "I figured you wouldn't want this bent even though it doesn't say do not bend." and he was right, it was an autograph inside.

Sometimes getting to know the carrier and chatting them up a bit can pay off.
Use google before you ask. Seriously.

for some reason with my maillady if it says do not bend she doesnt if it doesnt say anything she does   so I got a stamp made at Office Depot (20 bucks but worth it) (they make them over in the shipping/copying part) and just stamp the thing and off it goes and I dont have any issue's anymore

But to the one talking about them breaking you box with a book for some reason my maillady put 2 books I had ordered (both the size of Twilight's Breaking Dawn) in the box at the same time PLUS 3 mag's and 3 auto's and the rest of the mail lol It was fun trying to get all that out

Wow. My mailman is amazing compared to all of yours
If I have an autograph coming which says DO NOT BEND PLEASE, he knocks on the door and hands it to me so he doesn't bend it. Whereas he just puts in the slot on the door when it doesn't say.
