3 .44 will cover postage to the UK yes. But you cannot put US stamps on the SASE because we do not use them here. You would need UK stamps.

For up to 20g this would cost 90p and for up to 40g it would cost £1.35 although this is going up soon. If you use Royal Mail first class or second class stamps these stamps will increase in value in the same way that US Forever stamps do.

If you were to use first class stamps you would need 3 to cover a 20g letter and 4 to cover a 40g letter.

In your photo of your success it doesn't appear to have any stamps on it.

As for why it worked it probably slipped through the net by mistake.

Ok. I would be more likely to call that franked. I am quite surprised that you have a franking machine to be able to do this. The way you wrote what you did implied to me that you had placed physical stamps on to the envelope.

Even so this must have been a royal mail error because $1.20 has little value here given we use GBP.

It's bumping to 1.46 it would seem? Looks like I'll be spending more money on my next trade.

I would think the white barcode stickers were used as some sort of proof of payment on their side. I doubt Royal Mail would be able to process that stamp.

Because as far as I can tell, that's metered USPS postage on the envelope. The UK wouldn't have the equipment to process it.
