Both.

I love pictures because it's just really cool to say "I have a signed picture of Demi Lovato" compared to "I have a signature on an index card" people look at you weird. I don't always send pictures unless it's a album cover, dvd, or the celebrity has sent it to me. Sometimes my friends have given me pictures to send for both me and them, or occasionally I use things from magazines. Lots of people are against this, but it has never hurt me, so I don't see WHY NOT.

I prefer index cards because pictures can be difficult for me at times. Plus, for full casts (example toy story) I have this adorable picture from the disney fanmail address. I plan on framing the picture in the center with the full cast index cards completely around the picture. Some index cards I send are customized with stickers of the characters or pictures. I also send some index cards because it's cheaper, and I can easily frame them with a nice poster of that singer. It looks really cool.

The benefit of index cards is that its cheaper to send, and like mentioned, the contrast of the white background brings out the sig.

My downfall has been that a few ball players (I think) don't like index cards, they only like signing cards or pictures, because I've noticed with some ballplayers that they didn't reply (at all) to my index card, but they replied to everyone else's pictures and baseball cards.
Which is odd because on the other hand, i've had some really nice ballplayers that have sent a signed card(s) or picture(s) along with a signed or unsigned index card.

So in a very few cases, the index card could be as unattractive as the computer printout picture.

I've noticed a couple of singers do the same.

I NORMALLY send out the smaller 6 x 9-ish envelopes, and I'll include a cd cover OR 4 x 6 photo along with an index card. Some sign both and some just return the album cover. I've never gotten an index card back unsigned-- it just was never returned.

I have been sending 8x10 photo's that i put together using Google & Microsoft word & my printer. i just think it is better to see who it is who signed the photo cause i agree with one of you that sometime it is hard to see who sighed it. and i have had great success so far so i think i will stick to this method for now anyway.
