Not the kinda success I was hoping for. I sent a LOR and a SAE about a month ago.

Ok, so I don't get why these chase sketch cards they put into boxes of trading cards can get such insane prices on eBay. For example; I was interested in an Electro one from the Spider-Man archives series. Full color head sketch - pretty cool- and done by some artist I never heard of and has never had any work published in actual issues of comic books. It sells for $79!

I was watcing some other auctions and an original page drawn by Ron Wilson and inked by Joe Sinnott of The Thing (with Thing in all four panels) sells for $76. A Defenders page with loads of action and featuring Hellcat, drawn by Herb Trimpe sold for less than $78.

Is it the fact the sketch cards are colored? Is it the smaller and easy to display size that makes them more desirable? Subject matter? The chance of owning a (for now) unknown artists work? If anyone can explain it to me, I would appreciate it.

Part of it is the rarity of the sketches, part of it is the demand of certain characters and lastly part of it is there is no set standard for pricing these items.I know that's is a generic answer, but its the best explanation I was given myself. I own a whopping 2 sketch cards, one I lucked out cheaply on ebay (a Clone Wars sketch of Anakin) and the other was a packpull of an Aurora card of Alpha Flight from a set of Marvel Masterpiece. I did get the pack from Dollar General so you have a chance to get some decent pack pulls.

I dont collect sketch cards but Ive seen some when I was on Ebay looking up full sketches. I saw some that were expensive but they looked great. Some of the more known artists probably take a black marker and make loose sketches on their cards the lesser knowns probably take their time and yeah color is way better than black and white.

Same thing with action figure CHASES... they are inserted in a smaller #s so hence the increased value.

I get that there is only one per box and they can be hard to find, but what I can't figure out is how a comic book based sketch card (nice ones, I admit) by an unknown artist can be worth more than an entire page of art by an accomplished and known artist.

Ok, I also get that that same artists will do 22 pages per comic, 12 comics plus a year, for 20 years to equal a huge volume of work available; but it still blows me away the prices some of these sketch cards go for.

And lo there would be a comic book ttm success from me after a long time....

I contacted via facebook,Bill Spangler who used to write various Robotech comics for Eternity and later Academy comics.
He gave me an address to write to him at and in about a week and a half I recieved my comic, Robotech:Invid War issue 12 signed and inscribed for me.

Also anyone picking up the mini graphic novels from Kickstart comics? http://www.kickstartcomics.com They are selling for 3 bucks a pop and they are looking pretty interesting. Personal faves of the bunch Heavy Water, which is story involving Nazis and time travel and Witch which is suprisingly about a witch! Decent stories, good art, great price. Oh, I have been buying them at Wal-Mart btw....

back to sketch cards ...
I own over 1000.
A like them cause they are easy to store.
I have 5000+ comic books, and they are a PAIN to store - about to dump them.

I started with KNOWN comic artists, and expanded to new guys.
I'm not one to drop th BIG coin on a sketch card;
but i figure a box of trading cards is $50-70,
so a sketch card for anything less is a bargain versus opening the packs myself ...
