i would 100% sign authentically and personalize
and sign whatever

i would prefer they pay for postage
however...if they didn't, i'd have like an 8x10 photo for those who provided postage
and a 5x7 or 4x6 for those who didn't and i'd pay postage

I really like your idea about the smaller photos for those who don't send postage. That way you still respond but it doesn't cost a fortune. The way the USPS is going, you can send two normal sized letters for the price of a 8X10 envelope.
