Its an 88 cent investment and worst case scenario, you get both back. Very simple problem there brother...write another letter and throw a card or 2 in WITH SASE this time (idk why you'd ever assume people sent stuff back on their own dime, but whatever). Or, hold out hope he'll send it for you. Most people won't.

Anyway, nice return today from Seahawks 2nd round pick John Moffitt. Added 2 pictures with my index cards. Once again, a home address. This was the time, during a lockout, to hit the home addys hard. I got back quite a few NFL players via home addy during the lockout, notably Joe Haden. I think the lockout actually helped me get NFL ttm...now they're all gonna be busy soon. Don't expect a boost in returns when these guys are all cramming for a season in 2 weeks.
I only have one card of him, but I could print a picture of him and make something. But, when I was younger I never sent a SASE, and usually didn't send an item and got stuff back. This was around '05-'09. I've gotten Barry Zito, Steve Young, and some fan packs TTM before without a SASE. Although I did send Steve Young a picture.
I understand not understanding how the mail system works when you were a little kid. Maybe I'm assuming you're older than actually are, idk. Things don't work like that. Fan packs, yes. Teams eat the cost of fan packs as a form of publicity and PR, that's fine, but when you send a guy something without a return envelope and give the impression that you expect them to cover the cost to ship it back to you, its rude. And, like you pointed out, its gives the impression you have no idea what you're doing. Some people really dont care and will send you a larger item and even return your SASE...but you can't expect them to. If you really want the guys autograph, try him again with a SASE.

Sent to Adrian Wilson and got my card back unsigned and a letter from his mom saying that he wasn't going to be at her house for a while but she told him about my request.
That's not a "sort of success", that's called a "failure". Unless you classify getting the card back unsigned and hearing from his mother a success. This stuff happens all the time..its called "the run-around".

Yeah I'll chime in and say it is EXTREMELY rare to get any kind of a success without a SASE, unless you're talking about fan packs. These athletes may make a lot of money, but think about what would happen if a success was posted without a SASE on a site like this and word got out. Suddenly this person gets flooded with requests without SASEs, and a minor expense suddenly turns into a big issue. Then the athlete looks like a jerk for doing it for one person and not everyone else. Plus, everyone hates buying stamps. We do it because it's part of the hobby that we choose to participate in. If we asked the athletes we send these requests to to then pay for postage as well, we'd get very few responses.

As far as having only one card, I'd also agree that you could find a card pretty easy at a local sports card store or print a picture yourself. Prints can be printed at a lot of department stores for like 10 cents per picture, you can even order them online. I hate having to resend requests too, but sometimes it needs to be done and if you really want the sig then it's something you have to do.

Wasn't sure whether or not I was going to send this one, but decided to just send it anyway. Going out today, Redskins offensive lineman Kory Lichtensteiger. He has a real shot to start this year, and has great potential. He was a favorite of mine on the team last year. I know it's kind of random, and I was going to wait until the lockout was over to send c/o team, but I figured why not just do it now and try c/o home.

Well, I'va had several successes without SASE's, so I'll wait it out and see what happens.

You could try both of them c/o Pro Football Hall of Fame.

As for me, I had a Martin Mayhew failure today. I received my card unsigned with a "too busy to sign" letter from the Lions. Kind of a bummer, but I'll just try again some other time.

Bruce Smith TTM c/o NFL HoF (for like the 9th time). They will send it to him and it will be postmarked from his home addy. I see RTSes routinely from him if you send it directly to his home address. He is a great signer. Just don't abuse it.

I've got a John Randle still pending/lost TTM from over a year ago c/o HoF so I'm not sure about his 'signability'.

Wow, I gotta say I'm kind of surprised to see this. Normally this is something you see from winning teams who get a ton of mail. I sort of doubt Mr. Mayhew is getting flooded with autograph requests. Oh well, if he doesn't want to sign it's cool. Thanks for the heads up, saved me a stamp on this one.

I will echo what leebo said about Bruce Smith. He's a great guy, but if you don't send c/o the HOF he WILL return your item either RTS or unsigned. Not that this matters, but his sig is kind of messy too. I got him to sign a ball for me at a charity event years ago. When I got Bernie Kosar to sign the same ball, he looked at me and asked me if Bruce had signed this. I told him he did and Bernie told me to get him to sign it again because that sig was terrible. He yelled the same to Bruce and they both got a good laugh out of it. Messy sig or not, still one of the favorites in my collection :)
