Is it true that they are closing over the holidays? Can someone from the UK explain the situation to me?

That's not true at all as far as I know. Of course, there'll be no deliveries or collections on Christmas nor Boxing Day, but normal service resumes the 27th of December.

Quite a few mail centers were planning on striking however it was called off at the last minute. They'll probably do it in the new year instead.
