Hi. I've decided to try collecting a few autographs of celebrities I like after hearing of successful returns by Luise Rainer on her IMDb message board. Today I sent out SASEs with enclosed photos to:
Ernest Borgnine
Joan Fontaine
Celeste Holm
The post office had to order IRCs for me so I'll have to wait a few days before I can send out requests to:
Olivia de Havilland
Luise Rainer
I became a bit disillusioned however, when I found out on these forums that a lot of stars have their secretaries sign for them or they use auto-pens. I understand that many of them are incredibly busy and receive a lot of fan mail, so I would actually prefer just having my pictures returned unsigned than with a phony signature. However, none of these names appear on the phony lists, so I'm in the clear.
I would also be interested in getting signatures from lesser-known filmmakers such as costume designers, cinematographers, and film editors. Has anybody had any success with anybody like this?

Welcome to the wonderful world of autograph collecting. I am sure you will have fun with it like almost everyone else on this site. For a little tip though, dont waste your money on sending to Olivia de Havilland. She doesnt sign through the mail. Alot of people have tried and it just doesnt work. Good Luck with all other requests. Look forward to see your feedback

Thanks for the heads up on Olivia de Havilland. I had heard that it was very hard to get a response from her, but I guess she's stopped signing altogether now. Good that that's one less international envelope I have send!

Oh my God! I just saw that you were mailing to Olivia De Havilland and then read about her not signing through the mail. My heart skipped a beat for a second because I'm a HUGE Gone With The Wind Fan. Oh well, lol

Good luck with your letters. I am pretty sure that all three you have already sent:

Joan Fontaine
Celeste Holm
DO sign through the mail. I personally have Mr. Borgnine in my collction and have seen many Celeste Holm responces.

Congratulations on receiving your Joan Fontaine autograph. I like the list you have of pending requests. It seems we have a mutual interest in classic movies. I hope I am mistaken in thinking that at one time Ms. Fontaine employed a secretary. I think there have been a few arguments about it here.
