How many stamps should i put on my 9/12 envelope to america?

Hi,
Im from england and want to send a ordinary 9 by 12 inch envelope to america. I was thinking i could just put three 1st class stamps on it.
Can i do that or do i have to use a special envelope or something. What do i have to do?

This would equal about 5-6 first-class stamps.
