I think they can be as long as you don't abuse it in any way. Too often people use emails as a way to get free autographs, even if they're not a fan of the person. I only send to people via email who I really like. And I always say I don't mind providing a SASE if they prefer it.

This is very true. I know people who email for autos but dont know who the hell the person is. Just for the sake of having a signature. Im sad for them.

That's so wrong. And it's taking advantage of the person's kindness and generosity!

When I get an autograph, it has personal value to me. What's the point of getting an autograph if you don't know who the person is? It won't mean anything.

People write to people for autos considering them to be easy targets as well.
Personally I only email and write to people whose work I enjoy, but I'm well aware that not everyone shares my high-minded values and try not to get too self-righteous and pompous about it.
