Signed books

Do many collectors get books signed? Instore signings are great (though we don't have too many where I live); I'm always too afraid to post a book through the mail for fear of not getting it back, so I usually send book plates to stick in the books.

Wondering how others go about getting books signed, who's your favourite, and/or how big are your signed book collections?

Books are too expensive to ship and there's NO in-store signings where I live so I always make custom made bookplates. Of course, one exception is when I sent a Clifford book for Norman Bridwell to sign, but that wasn't overly expensive.

I've only sent one book through the mail to get signed. It was a small paperback copy of Bridge to Terrabithia. Got it back signed about 2 months later with no damage to the book. I get a few signings around where I live. In person I have met Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson author) and Robert Kurkela (Poet).

Books ARE expensive to send (let alone the potential non-return factor). As for no in-store signings, I have phoned/emailed book stores where I know there is a signing going on and asked them if they would kindly have a book signed for me. Haven't been turned down yet :).

Yeah I do that to! I've only done it twice but its better than not getting the autograph at all! :D I have done it for Ridley Pearson and the Diary of a Wimpy kid cast + author signing. :D

I've made a lot if book plates over recent years. I once contacted Ed Greenwood (Forgotten Realms) asking if he'd sign book plates for each of the books I had of his (appologizing that there would be about 18 of them). Not only did he not mind, on EACH AND EVERY bookplate he wrote a lengthy summary on his thoughts about that specific book! Plus the signature! Great author and wonderful man! Two other authors I've emailed to ask if they'd sign a book plate, both replied saying no, they'd just send out a signed copy if the book instead. Very nice of them. Terry Brooks, Tomothy Zahn & RA Salvatore all didn't mind signing a bunch of book plates either. Wonderful authors all!
