Mailed 31 LORs!

Hello! First off, I'm not positive that this is the correct section of the forum to post this, but thought I'd go ahead anyway.

I'm sending out LORs (with SASEs included inside) to a long list of celebrities on behalf of a friend of mine. For her birthday (in a few months), I'd like to give her an album of autographed photos of some of her favorite well-known people.

I found that by mailing a 9x12 manila envelope folded up inside of a 6x9 manila envelope (with both of their metal clasps removed) that the shipping cost within the U.S. is only .65 per letter! (Not including the postage on the SASE).

Below are the names of 31 people I sent snail mail LORs to yesterday (Feb. 21, 2012), based on the addresses given here at fanmail.biz. I plan to send some more, and also update the progress on this birthday present project.

Julie Andrews
Jack Black
Kelly Clarkson
George Clooney
Russell Crowe
Matt Damon
Doris Day
Johnny Depp
Zooey Deschanel
Leonardo DiCaprio
Céline Dion
Bobby Flay
Megan Follows
Anne Hathaway
Jon Heder
Katherine Heigl
Taylor Hicks
James Earl Jones
Olivia Newton-John
Christopher Plummer
Priscilla Presley
Robert Redford
Debbie Reynolds
Ryan Seacrest
Tony Shalhoub
George Strait
John Travolta
Alex Trebek
Carrie Underwood
Dick Van Dyke
Robin Williams

Also, I e-mailed five people as well, listed below.

Tim Allen (via timallen.com)
George Jones (via georgejones.com)
Jay Leno (via the Tonight Show website)
Paul McCartney (via JBL's website)
Neil Sedaka (via neilsedaka.com)

Thanks, Ryan.

I agree that the response rate will likely not be 100%. And even if I receive no response (hey, it could happen!) I will still give my friend the list of all the people I contact. It's the thought that counts, right?

And! I welcome any tips and suggestions that you have, or anyone else here for that matter, based on your experiences of successes and failures.

I would also like to wish you good luck.

I've written to Anne Hathaway and got a very nice Pre-Print and I tried Katherine Heigl a few times so far no success.

That's a great idea for a birthday present :)
I've had a Johnny Depp autopen success.

Good luck!

Don't forget that, even though it may not weigh much, a "large" envelope like a 9x12 still has minimum postage requirements. The cheapest a 9x12 is to mail is 90 cents, not 65 (65 cents is for a two-ounce normal-sized envelope).

You might not want to mail out a bunch of letters with postage due--they might not like that! A two-ounce large envelope like yours is $1.10.

Thanks. I'm actually folding up a 9x12 envelope (with proper postage, as you mentioned) inside of a 6x9 envelope, which the clerks at our Post Office say will ship for .65 a piece, as the thickness is less than 1/4 inch and the weight is (on average) only 1.3 ounces.

I've even tried this with 5x7 greeting card-size envelopes and they work fine also, if not better.

Here are today's additions to the list of people I've mailed LORs/SASEs to. Again, all of these were sent via addresses on fanmail.biz, unless otherwise noted.

Steve Carell
Micky Dolenz
Caroline Kennedy (to the Hyperion Editorial Dept. in New York City.)
Rachael McAdams
Bill Murray
Michael Nesmith (Note: I made no mention of the Monkees.)
Brad Paisley
Caroll Spinney
Peter Tork

Also, I received a quick response from Neil Sedaka's assistant which sounds very promising.

Thanks. I hope so, too. At the very least, this will be an interesting social science experiment. :)

I shipped out a couple more LORs last night:

Marc Brown
Cary Elwes

So this brings the total number of snail-mail LORs to...42!
