i prefer pictures
but i can understand why people used index cards,
sending pics can be expensive where as
index cards are alot cheaper and can be mounted to a frame with a nice big picture
(plus it does save the picture being bent/damage)

Yeah photos are by far the best thing to get signed. I sometimes send index cards too so hopefully in the future I can maybe mount it with a nice photo. Index cards also give room for the celebs to write small comments too which is nice. I also think with the index cards, the autographs stand out so well against the white so looks pretty cool. Or sometimes if I just have no time to purchase the photos and I have nothing else to send, then I will send an index card or a DVD cover etc.

I really like autographed photos. Some celebrities have signatures that you can't read!

If a photo is signed you can tell from the photo who it is.
Sure index cards are cheaper but if you send 4X6s they are pretty low cost.

People often send index cards because they are cheaper to mail and also easier to make custom projects with...things like this:
I'm just not an 8x10 collector...plus I only collect sports for the most part so I get a lot of signed cards, baseballs, etc

I started off sending colored unlined index cards. I've been sending pictures for some time now. Quite frankly I'm tired of dealing with copyright issues and I'm considering going back to index cards. If I were able to get the pictures without having them developed at a photo place there'd be no doubt in my mind. If that were the case I'd never send an index card again.
I think the radar for the copyright police (so to speak) is set at a lesser sensitivity for 4x6 as opposed to 8x10. If this batch of 51 4x6 photos get withheld it might be back to sending index cards.
My printer does say HP PhotoSmart so I might give printing my own a try.

PICS>INDEX CARDS
However for people trying to get a whole cast or a sports team they use the index cards method.

yes. For me, I'm trying to get the Harry Potter cast, so I make custom index cards for my collection, but I also send out 4x6 pics with the index card.

I prefer photos and on a larger scale of 8x10s only because I like the visual affect of them. Since I now have two full binders of 8x10s--going with smaller items seems more appealing now just for sake of storage if they can't be on display. I have quite a handful of 4x6 photos & index cards which I think are very nice as well especially if going scrapbook style or just in a photo album.
